A few basic rules for healthy living

Daytime

  • Live with daylight, especially in the morning: wake up at the same time every day, regardless of how long you slept (sleeping in late does not counterbalance a short night because the phases of sleep are not the same).
  • Avoid stimulants after 4 pm (coffee, tea, soda, vitamin C, etc.).
  • Practice a sport to feel a healthy fatigue at bedtime.
  • Skip a nap (or shorten it: no more than 20 minutes) to prevent it from cutting into your night’s “sleep capital."

Evening

  • Avoid heavy meals that are difficult to digest. Allow for a moment of relaxation between dinner and bedtime in order to digest calmly.
  • Avoid intensive physical or mental exercise (one hour before bedtime) and prefer relaxation.
  • Avoid screens that reproduce daylight and therefore do not encourage sleepiness.
  • Create an environment that is compatible with sleep, quiet, without lighting, cool, and keep your bed for sleeping (the bedroom should not be the TV room).
  • Don’t go to bed too early. Wait until you feel tired (telling signs: yawning, reduced attention span, fatigue, etc…), but don’t miss the right moment to fall asleep (sleep is organized in cycles: if you miss one, you’ll have to wait for the next one!).

Nighttime

  • In case of an extended awakening, don’t stay in bed dwelling on problems and constantly checking the time. Get out of bed and don’t go back until you feel sleepy.
